April 17, 2018

Natalie Winkelfoos
Associate VP for Athletics Advancement and Delta Lodge Director of Athletics & Physical Education, Oberlin College
Number of years in your position: 5
Hometown: Bucyrus, OH
Twitter handle: @GoYeoAD

Why did you become involved in NADIIIAA and what has the experience been like so far?
Joining NADIIIAA is an affirmation to yourself and others that you are taking the initiative to continue learning, sharpen your skills and keep your knowledge of the industry current. NADIIIAA has provided me an excellent opportunity to expand my network while providing exposure and connections to some of the best and brightest in college athletics.

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment to date?
It would be easy to point to fundraising victories that have allowed upgraded facilities but nothing can be created without building relationships that inspire change and trust.  With that said, I am most proud of the connections that have been made and continue to be made with staff, student-athletes, campus partners and our alumni.  Through this network we have shifted a culture and elevated expectations. We are now thinking bigger and working together to advance the competitive goals of Oberlin College.

What is the most important skill you have developed in your career?
Self-awareness.
Without understanding yourself, you can't improve yourself.  Having a strong sense of self leads to more confident decision-making, allows you to know where you need to focus your time and energy. Self-awareness is critical when building a team.  The best teams understand themselves and know how to complement each other.

What is your favorite part of being involved in DIII athletics?
DIII sports combine academics and athletics better than any other division.

If you didn’t have a career in DIII athletics administration, what would you be doing?
Oprah's running mate for the 2020 presidential election.
(It could happen...anything can happen!)

What is your favorite place to visit?
Cabo San Lucas

What is your favorite sporting event you have ever attended?
I'm a Cavs season ticket-holder.  I celebrated the return of Lebron James.
He is a beast on the court but I admire Lebron's commitment to activism the most.  He is a shining example of how to use a position of power to promote change.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Remain curious.
