The National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA) has announced the recipients of this year’s NADIIIAA Emerging Athletic Administrator and Transitioning Administrator Awards. Elaine Harvey, assistant director of communications and development at Wellesley College is the recipient of the Emerging Athletic Administrator Award, while Melissa Walton, senior associate AD/SWA at Albion College, was named the Transitioning Athletic Administrator Award winner for 2017. Annually, each award winner is presented with a commemorative plaque and a $1,000 professional development grant from NADIIIAA.
Both Harvey and Walton will receive their awards during the NADIIIAA Reception at the NCAA Convention held in Indianapolis, IN on Saturday, January 20.
The NADIIIAA Emerging Athletic Administrator Award is presented to a professional with seven or fewer year’s cumulative experience as a titled athletics administrator at the Division III level. The award recognizes involvement and leadership roles on an institution campus or in a conference office.
Harvey’s commitment to academic and athletic excellence and the importance of programming is evident daily through her work with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to enhance engagement in community service and alumnae engagement. Her passion working in athletics is demonstrated by her investment in her development role that includes: an increase in Friends of Athletics annual fund gifts by 31% to over $250K in 16-17 and achieving 100% giving from the senior student-athletes. In addition, she has managed the newly established Athletics Hall of Fame program for the third straight year. Finally, she has streamlined monthly communications with sports specific alumnae and enhanced the overall promotion of student-athletes.
The NADIIIAA Transitioning Athletic Administrator Award is presented to a professional who has transitioned from coaching or other professional duties to athletic administration and who has seven or fewer year’s cumulative experience as a titled athletics administrator at the Division III level. The award also recognizes involvement and leadership roles on an institution campus or in a conference office.
Since 2011, Walton has successfully made the transition from coach to administrator. In addition to providing excellent leadership to the young coaches and student-athletes through her role as our SAAC Advisor, she has also served on numerous committees on campus. These include the Albion College Strategic Planning Committee, President's Advisory Committee on Intercultural Affairs, Diversity Task Force, Inclusion and Respect Leadership team, and the Title IX Administration Team. Walton has also held leadership roles with in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. She has served on the MIAA Gender Equity Committee and as the Women's Soccer and Women's Lacrosse Sport Coordinator. Melissa has also continued to grow professionally over the past 6 years through gaining numerous certifications. Under her supervision, the Albion College Student Athlete Advisory Committee has won 5 national awards and 2 local awards for its community service projects completed within the City of Albion and surrounding area.
