“This is a much deserved award for the Iowa State marketing team,” said NACMA President Jamie DiLoreto, associate athletics director – external operations at Boston College. “The entire department has done an outstanding job with their marketing efforts and NACMA is pleased to honor them with this prestigious award.”

In 2011, Iowa State launched the “We Are One” campaign. With a total budget of $317,000 cash and trade to promote football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball, the department generated over $13.5 million between those three sports.  Their overall ROI was 41.8 percent.  The department created a unique program that combined fan experience, innovation and social media.  They utilized Fan Tweets as billboard messaging and made the experience interactive by posting photos on Facebook. Iowa State’s football season ticket sales exceeded their season goal of 31,000 by more than 6,200 season tickets.  They sold an additional 1,100 men’s basketball public season tickets and 600 student season tickets and in women’s basketball, achieving a 10-year high that included an increase of nearly 800 student season tickets.

“We feel honored to win given that there is a lot of amazing work being done by other collegiate athletics marketing departments,” said Mary Pink, associate athletics director for marketing at Iowa State. “This award just reaffirms how closely and cohesively our staff works together to help make the Iowa State Athletics department the best it can be.

In its inaugural year, there were 16 nominations for the MTOYA, spanning across FBS (7), FCS (5), Division I-AAA (1) and non-Division I institutions (3). It was created to show the type of impact that a marketing team has not only on the athletics department, but the campus and surrounding communities as well.

The two other finalists for the 2012 MTOYA were California State University Bakersfield University of Texas San Antonio

The selection committee was made up of NACMA Past Presidents, as well as 2 NACDA Past Presidents.

Award recipients will receive the respected NACMA MTOYA Trophy to keep in their offices and will be announced and recognized at the NACDA Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, June 26 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas.  The finalists’ submissions will be posted on the NACMA Online Library for the membership to view.
