Western Kentucky University invites nominations and applications for Director of Intercollegiate Athletics to lead its Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, a comprehensive Division I Intercollegiate Athletics Program that oversees expenditures of approximately $19 million, supports 76 employees, and serves approximately 440 student-athletes in nine men's and ten women's sports competing in the Sun Belt Conference. The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics reports to the President and serves on the President's Administrative Council.

The University:

Western Kentucky University is a comprehensive university enrolling 20,750 students and an annual budget of more than $349 million. WKU's enrollment makes it the fastest growing university in Kentucky. WKU's undergraduate division provides four-year programs, 79 academic majors and 84 academic minors. WKU is involved in a $200 million comprehensive campaign set to conclude in 2012, and has reached the $160 million mark in cash and pledges. WKU's main campus is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, population 55,000, located approximately 110 miles south of Louisville and 65 miles north of Nashville, Tennessee. Located on a hill overlooking the city of Bowling Green, the WKU campus is acclaimed as one of the most beautiful in the nation.

The Department:

WKU's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics considers athletics to be an integral and visible aspect of WKU life. WKU has 19 men's and women's athletic programs currently competing in the Sun Belt Conference and is one of only 120 Football Bowl Subdivision members. Ten teams have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, and 42 student-athletes currently have a 4.0 GPA. During the last 10 years, WKU has won 66 Sun Belt Conference championships, 85 percent of student-athletes who have completed their eligibility have graduated, and athletic facilities have undergone $100 million in new construction or renovations.

The mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to provide a broad-based athletics program which emphasizes the academic and personal development of the student-athletes while upholding the principles of good sportsmanship and ethical conduct as defined by the NCAA, conference affiliations, and the University. Fair and equitable opportunities will be a priority and will be provided for student-athletes and staff to participate in intercollegiate athletics at the Division I level regardless of gender or ethnicity. The sports programs of the Department of Athletics will be competitive regionally and nationally while serving the University's constituents through entertainment and public service.

 

 

The Position:

Director of Intercollegiate Athletics is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Athletics program, including financial decisions, programmatic decisions, scheduling of athletic events, and those related to the athletics facilities and fund-raising. Additionally, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics monitors and promotes compliance with all NCAA, Sun Belt Conference, and University rules and regulations.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of five years of progressively responsible senior-level experience administering a Division I intercollegiate athletics program; and a demonstrated commitment to directing an athletics program that reflects the University's values
  • Demonstrated ability to compromise and reach consensus on difficult issues, particularly related to utilization of scarce resources
  • Demonstrated success in major gift and annual fund-raising activities
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of the regulatory, legal, and university policy environment governing intercollegiate athletics and a dedication to abide by the letter and intent of the same
  • Ability to hire and recruit outstanding coaches and staff
  • Proven strong organizational and leadership skills with demonstrated competence in program development, administration, decision-making and fiscal management skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of athletics including, but not limited to: student-athlete academic achievement, fund-raising, marketing, compliance, and Title IX
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, sponsors, public, and the media
  • Proven ability to engage the student body
  • Demonstrated commitment to all facets of student-athlete welfare including academic success
  • Commitment to providing an athletics program that supports equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities
  • Commitment to contribute to the overall diversity of WKU
  • Demonstrated personal and professional integrity
  • Demonstrated compliance with all NCAA, conference, and University rules, policies, and procedures. The University expectation is that all position responsibilities should be carried out in full compliance with all such rules and regulations.

    Desired/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree
  • Experience working at a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Intercollegiate Athletics Program
