The University of Arizona invites nominations and applications for Director of Athletics to lead its Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, a comprehensive Division I Intercollegiate Athletics Program that oversees expenditures in excess of $54 million, supports 150 employees, and serves approximately 509 student-athletes in 19 men's and women's sports competing in the PAC-10 Conference. The Director of Athletics reports to the President and serves on the President's Cabinet.

THE UNIVERSITY

THE DEPARTMENT

The University of Arizona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) considers athletics to be an integral part of the University community following and honoring the University of Arizona's overall institutional mission. THE PROGRAM

The University of Arizona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics ranks among the elite in all of college athletics, as witnessed by the following:

  • Arizona has won a total of 20 national championships
  • Arizona student-athletes have won more than 125 individual national championships
  • Arizona student-athletes have claimed more than 1,200 individual All-America accolades
  • More than 100 Arizona student-athletes have participated in the Olympic Games since 1952, including at least one in every Olympiad since 1960, winning a total of 66 medals
  • 27 Arizona student-athletes have been named National Player of the Year in their respective sports
  • 26 Arizona head coaches have earned national Coach of the Year accolades
  • 14 of UA's 19 teams (74 percent) participated in NCAA Championship postseason play last season
  • Three Wildcat teams finished in the top eight places at the NCAA Championships in 2008-09
  • A total of 32 student-athletes earned All-America honors in 2008-09
  • More than 50 student-athletes earned conference, regional or national All-Academic honors in 2008-09
  • Ten of 19 teams achieved a perfect 1000 annual Academic Progress Rate score in 2008 and all 19 teams are projected to be above a multi-year rate of 925 when the NCAA releases the 2009 scores in May 2010
  • Also in 2009 nine teams had a 75% or higher Graduation Success Rate and the overall rate of 61% is projected to increase by up to 5% in 2010
  • In the last three seasons, two student-athletes have earned NCAA Woman-of-the-Year honors
  • In the last two seasons, UA student-athletes have earned a Walters Byers Award and been named a Rhodes Scholar

THE POSITION

The Director of Athletics is responsible for planning, directing and coordinating a comprehensive Division I Intercollegiate Athletics Program that oversees expenditures in excess of $54 million, supports 150 employees, and serves approximately 509 student-athletes in 19 men's and women's sports competing in the PAC-10 Conference. The Director of Athletics reports to the President and serves on the President's Cabinet.

The Director of Athletics provides leadership for coaching and administrative staffs in the identification, development and realization of departmental goals and objectives consistent with the mission of the University. The Director of Athletics is also responsible for establishing and overseeing departmental processes designed to review, assess and improve effectiveness of coaches, staff and programs mindful of the academic and personal needs of the student-athletes. Additionally, the Director of Athletics monitors and promotes compliance with all NCAA, Pacific-10 Conference and University rules and regulations.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of five years of progressively responsible senior-level experience administering a Division I intercollegiate athletics program; and a demonstrated commitment to directing an athletics program that reflects the University's values
  • Demonstrated ability to compromise and reach consensus on difficult issues, particularly related to utilization of scarce resources
  • Demonstrated success in major gift and annual fund-raising activities
  • Demonstrated extensive knowledge of the regulatory, legal, and university policy environment governing intercollegiate athletics and a dedication to abide by the letter and intent of the same
  • Ability to hire and recruit outstanding coaches and staff
  • Proven strong organizational and leadership skills with demonstrated competence in program development, administration, decision-making and fiscal management skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of athletics including, but not limited to: student-athlete academic achievement, fundraising, marketing, compliance, and Title IX
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations of students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, sponsors, public and the media
  • Proven ability to engage the student body
  • Demonstrated commitment to all facets of student-athlete welfare including academic success
  • Commitment to providing an athletics program that supports equitable opportunities for all students and staff, including women and minorities
  • Commitment to contribute to the overall diversity of the University of Arizona
  • Demonstrated personal and professional integrity
  • Demonstrated compliance with all NCAA, PAC-10 conference, and University rules, policies, and procedures. The University expectation is that all position responsibilities should be carried out in full compliance with all such rules and regulations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree
  • Experience working at a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Intercollegiate Athletics Program

SALARY

  • Commensurate with education, experience, knowledge and skills
