Aug. 6, 2018
CLEVELAND – The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and CDW•G, a leading multi-brand technology solutions provider to business, government, education and healthcare organizations in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, have announced Xavier University as the winner of the 2018 Best Game Day Technology Experience Award. Xavier was chosen from a pool of three finalists and received the award for its ‘Tech Deck’ initiative.
The Best Game Day Technology Award will be presented in the fall, at an on-campus event hosted by Xavier.
“It’s an honor to be selected as the winner of the Best Game Day Technology Experience Award by NACDA and CDW•G among all of the outstanding submissions,” said Brian Hicks, associate athletics director for external relations at Xavier. “The success of this project is the result of efforts from a number of areas within our department, and seeing the concept transform from an idea to reality has been an exciting process. The Tech Deck provides our fans with a one-of-a-kind experience, and we hope to continue to develop new and innovative features for Xavier Nation to provide a game-day experience among the best in the nation.”
The award was designed to recognize NACDA member institutions in Division I, honoring athletics directors and their universities highlighting the ways technology plays a role in the fan experience. A five-person committee consisting of athletics directors across the country and representatives from CDW•G and NACDA aided in selecting Xavier as this year’s award winner.
Xavier will receive a trophy and $25,000 in Microsoft and Cisco technology products and services sold by CDW•G.
“CDW•G celebrates the groundbreaking experience Xavier provides its fans,” said Dan Fagan, manager of strategic programs, CDW. “The Tech Deck is a truly unique space that represents the best in game-day innovation.”
“Xavier’s Tech Deck truly takes the Game Day Technology Experience to another level,” said NACDA Executive Director, Bob Vecchione. “For fans at the Cintas Center, this opportunity was unlike anything offered in the collegiate athletics space, serving as an incredible complement to the on-court product put out by Xavier. It will be exciting to see how this aspect of fan engagement expands in the coming years.”
Xavier University’s Tech Deck features what is believed to be the first in-arena live virtual reality game experience of its kind. The space was renovated from an existing conference room on the 4th level of the Cintas Center, the home of Xavier Athletics and 10,224-seat arena for men’s basketball. The Tech Deck was rented on a single-game basis starting at $1,500 per game plus food and beverage for up to 40 guests. The room included a television wall, glass garage door to be opened to allow full access onto a balcony in the arena, and virtual reality headsets that enable fans to watch the action as if they were standing at midcourt. The Tech Deck was sold for 17 of the 19 home games during the 2017-18 season, generating nearly $40,000 in revenue.
