April 15, 2009
Cleveland, OH - The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) announced today that Andy Mooradian, former director of athletics at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) has been selected by the NACDA Officers and Executive Committee to be the recipient of the 43rd James J. Corbett Memorial Award posthumously.
The Corbett Award is presented annually to the collegiate administrator who "through the years has most typified Corbett's devotion to intercollegiate athletics and worked unceasingly for its betterment." Corbett, athletics director at Louisiana State University, was NACDA's first president in 1965. The award is the highest honor one can achieve in collegiate athletics administration. Additionally, Mooradian's family will receive an honorary degree from the Sports Management Institute (SMI), an educational institute sponsored by NACDA and the universities of Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Southern California and Texas.
Mooradian, a NACDA Hall of Fame member and Past President, served as director of athletics at UNH for 21 years, from 1966-87, although his association with the University spanned 45 years. In 1942, Mooradian began his association with the Durham campus, playing football, basketball and baseball. After serving in the military in World War II, he returned to the University, graduating in 1948. Mooradian's daughter, Jody, senior associate AD/senior women's administrator at Boston College, stated "My father would be unbelievably humbled to receive this award. He would feel like he didn't deserve it, but that it is a wonderful cap to a wonderful career."
Nationally, Mooradian served as president of NACDA during 1985-86. He served on the NCAA Council, was executive director of the Yankee Conference, president of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association (ECAC) and president of the North Athletic Conference.
In October 1994, UNH honored Mooradian by naming the football stadium field - Mooradian Field. To honor his legacy at the University, the Andrew Mooradian Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 by family, friends and the University community in his memory. The Fund provides a permanent source of support for the UNH football team.
