NACDA and USG now accepting nominations for second annual Sustainability Award

Feb. 22, 2016

CLEVELAND — The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USG Corporation (NYSE: USG) are now accepting nominations for the second annual Sustainability Award. The USG NACDA Sustainability Award honors athletics directors and their universities for incorporating sustainable practices and materials into their athletics facilities.

Based on the positive response in its inaugural year from Division I institutions, the Sustainability Award is now open to NACDA member institutions across all divisions. The winning school will receive $30,000 in USG product, and second and third place will win $10,000 each in USG product, for use toward any athletic or academic facility at the selected institution.

“The Sustainability Award is an outlet to recognize those institutions with athletics departments that have taken great care to plan for not only what is best for their student-athletes, but for what is best for the environment and the community,” said Linda McGovern, Vice President of Marketing, USG Corporation. “USG’s partnership with NACDA allows us to enable those athletics directors and universities who are committed to sustainable practices and building for the future.”

The deadline for NACDA members to submit nominations for the 2016 Sustainability Award is Sunday, May 1. To be considered, the renovation or new construction of an athletics facility should have taken place anytime after January 1, 2014. Applications will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Demonstrated innovation and initiative in implementing sustainable building practices
  • Best practices in energy efficiency and control, resource application and management, water efficiency, the use of sustainable materials in design and construction, facility flexibility and use of existing environment
    • Possible program examples include: energy efficiency, water usage minimization, greenhouse gas emission abatement, pollution prevention (noise, water, air, soil and light), waste avoidance (recycling), biodiversity, reduced natural resource consumption, indoor environmental quality (productive and healthy environments), building management systems (control systems for HVAC)

NACDA is proud to partner with USG for the second annual Sustainability Award,” said NACDA Executive Director, Bob Vecchione. “We saw some impressive submissions in our inaugural efforts last year, and we are looking forward to seeing even more in year two. Sustainability is growing increasingly more significant in all phases of our daily lives, which is why this award will continue to grow and prosper in the years ahead.”

Three finalists will be announced on Monday, June 13, at the NACDA & Affiliates Convention in Dallas, Texas, with the winner announced at a later date following the conclusion of the Convention.

A seven-person committee consisting of athletics directors from across the country and representatives from USG and NACDA will help choose the award winner, including:
