Cleveland, Ohio - The National Association of Athletics Development Directors (NAADD) has announced that Steve Spurrier, head football coach at the University of South Carolina, will be a featured speaker at NAADD's annual convention in Orlando (FL), June 7-10, 2007.
"We are pleased that Coach Spurrier has agreed to speak at our annual convention," said Chris Wyrick, South Carolina's associate athletic director of development and a member of NAADD's Executive Committee. "Coach Spurrier is not only a great football coach, but also a terrific leader, both on and off the field.
"Coach Spurrier and his wife Jeri were the first people to publicly contribute a major gift to our campaign. In addition, during the first few months of launching our campaign, he has made multiple solicitation calls with 100 percent success."
In his first season at the helm of the Gamecocks a year ago, Spurrier led the squad to a 7-5 record and a second place finish in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Eastern Division. He posted a five-game winning streak for the 15th straight year, something no other coach in college history has accomplished. For his efforts, Spurrier was named the SEC Coach-of-the-Year by the Associated Press for the sixth time in his career.
Prior to taking over the Gamecocks, Spurrier was the head coach of the NFL's Washington Redskins (2002-03) and his alma mater, the University of Florida (1990-2001). At Florida, Spurrier led the Gators to seven SEC titles, a national championship and a 122-27-1 (.817) overall record.
As a player, Spurrier was the 1966 Heisman Trophy winner as Florida's quarterback, and he became the only Heisman trophy winner to coach another Heisman recipient when Danny Wuerffel claimed the nation's top honor in 1996.
Spurrier and legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant of Alabama are the only coaches in SEC history to win four straight outright league championships (1993-96). His six outright SEC titles (1991, '93-96, 2000) ties him for second best in league history, trailing only Bryant (11).
NAADD is the first organization of its kind to provide educational and networking opportunities, enhancement of acceptable operating standards and ethics, and establishment of the overall prestige and understanding of the profession of athletic development and fund raising.
NAADD is administered by NACDA. In its 42nd year, NACDA is the professional and educational association for more than 6,100 college athletics administrators at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. More than 2,000 athletics administrators annually attend the NACDA Convention. Additionally, NACDA administers 10 professional associations for the separate business units that report directly to the athletics director.
