IU highlights D. Ames Shuel Academic Center Campaign
D. Ames Shuel Academic Center 1. Please describe your Athletic Department's current campaign: Indiana University Athletics launched the For the Glory of Old IU Campaign, the first major campaign in its history, with the aim of raising $80 million. The IU Department of Athletics needed an academic center to help student-athletes achieve their goals in the classroom. With the completion of the D. Ames Shuel Academic Center, IU went from one of the smallest academic centers in the Big Ten to one of the largest. 2. How will this campaign impact your student-athletes or sports programs and what additional benefit can be seen from the campaign's completion? It allows the student-athletes to achieve the balance necessary to succeed in their academic programs while saving them time, as it is located on the athletic campus. It also contributes to increased camaraderie among all athletes in the 24 varsity sports, as each program has an opportunity to utilize the space. In addition, the modern computer labs and dedicated tutoring/study space combined with staff offices makes for an optimized academic enhancement experience.

3. What innovative ways have you tried to attract donors? During the For the Glory of Old IU Campaign, it was the first time that we established a comprehensive offering of naming opportunities for the various facilities that were being built. We had named and endowed scholarships for some time and have many loyal donors who have supported us in that way. The campaign allowed us the chance to present our donors and prospects with unique capital naming opportunities ranging from individual lockers to building namings.
4. Can you provide one unique story regarding donor interaction for this campaign? When Scott Dolson (Deputy Director of Athletics/Director of the IU Varsity Club) was meeting with D. Ames Shuel in early 2011 to solicit the eventual naming gift for the new Academic Center, Mr. Shuel was struggling to visualize how the gift would be impactful. He was certain that he wanted to make a significant contribution to the university so he challenged the lead development officer to articulate why this would be the ideal project for him to support. His love of athletics and commitment to academics ultimately led Mr. Shuel to commit to the naming gift of the new Center. However, it was not until Mr. Shuel attended the formal university naming ceremony in September, along with family members and close friends that he fully understood the magnitude of his contribution. When he saw the completed Center in person and interacted with the student-athletes first hand, Mr. Shuel saw and felt how his commitment was impacting the lives of countless student-athletes now and in the future.
