Jane Claiborne Position: Asst. Director of Multicultural Student Programs/Serv Institution: College of Charleston

Jane Claiborne was a member of the Valparaiso University athletics department beginning 1995 and served as Associate Director of Athletics before leaving. Since March 2008, Claiborne is serving as Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Programs and Services at College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.

During her tenure at Valpo, Claiborne served as the department's liaison for human resources, information services, and payroll in addition to serving as the sport administrator for men's soccer, men and women's cross country, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men and women's tennis. In addition, she acted as the coordinator for the athletics' internship program, managed the department's administrative budget, and administered the NCAA Special Assistance Fund.

Claiborne served as the Minority Issues Plan Chair for the athletics department, where she implemented programs with faculty and staff to address academic, social, and personal issues that students and athletes of color encounter.

Claiborne was co-chair for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Observance on campus in 1995, 2006, and 2007. She led faculty, staff, students, local organizations, and community members throughout the year in planning a week-long celebration to commemorate the legacy of Dr. King.

Claiborne has served as a mentor in the Office of Multicultural Programs, advisor to the Black Student Organization, and is also on the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association Board of Directors. In addition, she has served as the Multicultural Alumni Networking Association Advisor at Valparaiso as well as coordinated the Helping Hand Mentoring Program for at-risk students on campus to encourage them to think about their career and personal goals as well as their faith.

Claiborne received her Bachelor of Arts from Valparaiso University in 2001, graduating cum laude, and then proceeded to earn her Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies at Valpo in 2004.
