John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation Receives Record Number of Applications for Postgraduate Scholarships

April 11, 2017

CLEVELAND — The John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation announced that it has received a record number of applications for its postgraduate scholarship in 2017. Since 1999, the Foundation has been awarding $10,000 postgraduate scholarships annually to minority candidates who are planning to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration.

There were a total of 95 nominations received for the 2017-18 scholarship, more than doubling the previous high of 47.

“We are extremely pleased with the number of nominations received this year for the John McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship,” said Lee Reed, McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation president and director of athletics at Georgetown University. “The interest in the program truly speaks to the impact that minority athletics administrators have on the industry, and the positive direction that our profession is moving. The Board of Directors is looking forward to honoring six deserving individuals with this recognition.”

Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded 95 postgraduate scholarships, totaling $960,000. To date, the scholarship recipients represent 73 different institutions across the country. Institutions with three or more scholarship recipients include UCF, Hampton University, University of Oklahoma and University of Washington.

The John McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship is given in addition to any other awards or scholarships a student may have already received. This year, through the support of the Fiesta Bowl, one of the six available scholarships for 2017-18 is earmarked specifically for a minority candidate from an Arizona based four-year institution.

Reed and the Board of Directors will review the nominations over the next few weeks to determine the recipients. Winners will be announced in mid-May and recognized during the NACDA & Affiliates Convention, June 8-15 at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Florida.
