Cleveland, Ohio -- The Awards Committee of the International Collegiate Licensing Association (ICLA) have selected their annual award recipients.
Those being honored include Jenny McDaniel of Indiana University with the Synergy Award: Program of the Year; Linda Gilbert of the University of Missouri with the Distinguished Service Award; and Maureen Riedel of Penn State University with the Gold Star Award.
Award winners will be recognized at ICLA's Fourth Annual Convention, June 20-23 at the New Orleans Marriott and Sheraton New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana.
ICLA provides educational and networking opportunities, enhancement of acceptable operating standards and ethics, and establishment of the overall prestige and understanding of the profession of collegiate licensing.
ICLA is administered by NACDA, now in its 41st year, is the professional and educational association for more than 6,100 college athletics administrators at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. More than 2,000 athletics administrators annually attend the NACDA Convention. Additionally, NACDA administers nine professional associations for the separate business units that report directly to the athletics director.
A brief biographical sketch of each of the award recipients follows:
Synergy Award: Program of the Year
Jenny McDaniel, Indiana University
Jenny McDaniel is the vice president of licensing and trademarks at the Indiana University Research and Technology Corporation. She is responsible for the successful development, promotion, marketing, protection and usage of all Indiana University trademarks and logos. She also manages the athletics department and IU book stores, negotiates contract terms with licensees, audits licensees and initiates appropriate legal actions and settlements for trademark infringements. McDaniel advises university departments and personnel of established policies and procedures as to proper usage of IU insignia and trademarks and works with student activists regarding labor standards. She was selected by Indiana University to serve on the Integrated Image Initiative Committee and is also a member of the Anti-Sweatshop Advisory Committee. McDaniel graduated from IU and was named First-Team All Big Ten Conference in softball her senior year. Following graduation, she became an assistant coach for the IU softball team, holding that position for three years. In 1991, she became a partner in a retail sporting goods store. As vice president in charge of operations, the business successfully expanded to two retail stores. In 1997, McDaniel became a licensing manager at Advanced Research and Technology Institute. Within one year, she was named director of the licensing and trademarks office and, four years later, was named vice president of licensing and trademarks.
Distinguished Service Award
Linda Gilbert, University of Missouri
Linda Gilbert serves as program administrator of the Licensing and Trademark Programs for the University of Missouri, a position she has held since 1988. During this time she has been active in the Association of Collegiate Licensing Administrators (ACLA), having served three terms on the Board of Directors in various positions. In 2002, she finished a three-year term on the National Collegiate Licensing Association Board (NCLA). She served on the transition committee to merge ACLA and NCLA into ICLA. Gilbert was president of ICLA in 2004. She also served on several program committees and was program co-chair for the 2003 Workshop. She has presented at several licensing conferences and has authored several articles in the licensing/trademark field. In addition to her licensing duties at MU, Gilbert coordinates the university business policy and procedures manual and is web coordinator for the vice chancellor of administrative services' department. In 1994, she was presented with the ACLA James L. "Jet" Smith award and, in 2003, the MU Licensing and Trademark Program was the recipient of the ICLA Synergy Award. She received her bachelor's degree in business education from Truman State University (formerly Northeast Missouri State).
Gold Star Award
Maureen Riedel, Penn State University
Maureen Riedel joined Penn State University in October 2004. As manager of trademark licensing in the Office of Licensing Programs at Penn State, Riedel is responsible for the management and overall strategic direction of Penn State's domestic and international licensing programs. She also serves on the Executive Committee for the Fair Labor Association's University Advisory Council. She is an active member of ICLA, currently serving on the Board of Directors. Prior to joining Penn State, Riedel was the licensing administrator for Syracuse University's Trademark Licensing program, where her collegiate licensing experience began in 1999. She is a graduate of the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, where she majored in marketing management.
