ICLA Selects 2013 Award Winners

CLEVELAND - The International Collegiate Licensing Association (ICLA) has announced its 2013 award winners that will be honored at its Annual Convention, Thursday-Saturday, June 13-15 at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Florida. Texas A&M University was named the 2013 Synergy Award: Program of the Year, Strategic Marketing Affiliates was named the ICLA Corporate Service winner and Dale Arens, trademark licensing and athletics hall of fame director at the University of Iowa, will be inducted into the Association's Hall of Fame.  

"We look forward to honoring Texas A&M and Strategic Marketing Affiliates with our premier awards and welcoming Dale into our Hall of Fame," stated ICLA President David Wilson, trademark licensing director at Purdue University.

Synergy Award: Program of the Year - Texas A&M University

During the past year, the university successfully elevated the Texas A&M brand on the national stage in part through the integrated efforts of the Business Development office with the institutional-level marketing and communications teams.  The Business Development office serves as a brand ambassador for the University with the understanding that everything the team does impacts the Texas A&M brand.  By strategically integrating licensing with all other university functions in a "one brand" approach, Shane Hinckley, assistant vice president of business development for Texas A&M, has been able to assist in leveraging Texas A&M into what is widely recognized as one of the hottest college brands in the country.

Hinckley is responsible for the supervision of new and existing business opportunities associated with the University.  His area of oversight includes the on-campus bookstore, the state license plate program, Pepsi relationship and adidas sideline apparel partnership, as well as other business and marketing opportunities that reach across all divisions, colleges and units of Texas A&M - a major enterprise that includes 53,000 students, 6,000 faculty and staff, and an overall budget of $1.2 billion.

Hinckley also directs the Texas A&M licensing program in its entirety.  This program administers the use of the University's name, marks, and still and moving images with internal and external partners.  In September 2010, Hinckley created and was given oversight for the first licensing program for The Texas A&M University System, which includes 10 universities - including the flagship campus -- and six state agencies. 

Hinckley served on the board of directors for ICLA from 2006-12, serving as President of the organization in 2010-11. 

Rosa Rodriguez has worked in the licensing office at Texas A&M since 1994.  She oversees all artwork submissions and works with internal and external customers regarding the use of Texas A&M trademarks.  

Kyle Pope is a graduate of Texas A&M University and came to work for The Texas A&M University System in 2011 after spending three years at the Collegiate Licensing Company.  Pope works with the A&M System universities and state agencies to develop and strengthen their trademark licensing programs.

Corporate Service Award - Strategic Marketing Affiliates

Founded in 1997, Indianapolis based Strategic Marketing Affiliates, Inc. ("SMA") is a leader in the collegiate licensing industry representing over 291 collegiate clients, throughout North America. SMA provides intellectual property representation and counsel to academic institutions and intercollegiate athletic conferences of all sizes.

SMA is a full-service licensing agency which provides clients with the knowledge, experience and guidance necessary to administer all aspects of a world-class licensing program. Each of their partners receives expanded protection and promotional efforts while increasing revenue generation at the same time.

In 2012, SMA celebrated another successful year, adding 38 new clients.  In spite of many economic reports predicting the continued frailty of the economy and individual consumers' ability and/or willingness to spend, 83 percent of SMA clients experienced an average increase of 36 percent in gross royalties.

Hall of Fame - Dale Arens, University of Iowa

Dale Arens is currently the trademark licensing director at Iowa, a position that he has held since 2002. He is a past-president and a current board member of ICLA. Previously, Arens directed the Iowa Athletics Department merchandising program for 16 years. Overall, Arens has over twenty-five years of experience in the collegiate licensed products industry as a buyer, seller, marketer, and licensor of college licensed products.

In addition to his trademark licensing duties, Arens is the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame & Museum Director where he oversees the operations of this unique museum and events center that celebrates the rich heritage of Iowa athletics history. He is a past board member and active member of the International Sports Heritage Association.

Arens is involved in his community as current board member and past chair of the Iowa City/Coralville Conventions and Visitors Bureau. He is also a long time member of Parkview Church.

Arens will celebrate 30 years of marriage this summer to his wife Lynette. Their family includes a married son Luke, daughter-in-law Tracie, and a daughter Kelsey who is currently a graduate student at The University of Iowa.
