Dr. Greg Waggoner is beginning his 17th year as Athletic Director at Western State College of Colorado. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Western State in 1980 and 1981 respectively. He received his Ed. D. from the University of Northern Colorado in 1994. Under his guidance, the college has generated numerous special events to promote interest in Mountaineer athletics and to attract financial support from alumni, friends and corporate partners. Over $16 million has been raised privately for Mountaineer Athletics in the past 16 years and each of the past six years have produced annual revenues and pledges that exceed $1 million. Private/external/enterprise generated revenues make up 36-48 percent of the total Western State athletic budget. The average in the NCAA Division II is 24 percent. Additionally, over $6 million in athletic facility improvements have been made for Mountaineer athletics in the past 15 years from public and private sources. Other accomplishments as athletic director have included significant expansion of summer athletic camps, creation of the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame, creation of several special event fund-raisers, establishment of a new endowed letterjacket fund, close involvement in the planning for the $5.2 million renovation and addition of Paul W. Wright Gymnasium (1998), which houses the athletic department and the academic department of Recreation and Exercise Sport Science, increasing coaching positions and support staff to help assure a high quality athletic experience for the student-athletes, increasing service projects and community engagement through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, achieving significant gender-equity adjustments, increasing diversity and gender balance in the staff, spearheading the college's merchandise licensing program and devising plans to continue a thriving athletic program for the college. Funding was recently obtained to build a $32 million indoor track fieldhouse and student recreation center. Among the intercollegiate facilities that will be included are the six-lane, 200-meter indoor track, new football offices and complex, cross country and track and field offices and locker rooms and a weight room expansion. Additional goals and projects that are part of the current vision for Western State athletics include obtaining funding of nearly $3 million for a new press box and team rooms in Mountaineer Bowl. Additionally, the early stages have been launched to increase scholarship endowments for all sport programs through sport specific capital campaigns exceeding several million dollars. Waggoner is the owner of Rocky Mountain Athletic Consulting Services and is a regular speaker on such topics as team building, liability/sport law, Title IX, fundraising, NCAA clearinghouse standards, contemporary issues in coaching, marketing student-athletes to colleges, parent relations, motivation, strategic planning and other selected topics. He is also professionally active as the current President of the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association, current member of the National Association for Collegiate Directors of Athletics Executive Committee, the past Chair of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Committee, and past Chair of the RMAC AD's council. Waggoner is also active in community service locally. He is a 1971 GHS Football Memorial Foundation board member, a member of the Gunnison Elks Lodge, a past member of the Citizens for a Gunnison Community Center Committee, a past member of the Gunnison Valley Hospital/Community Evaluation Committee, Relay for Life team captain and a regular volunteer at other community events and activities. Prior to focusing full-time on his athletic administration career, Dr. Waggoner enjoyed a successful coaching and teaching career for 18 years, including 12 of those years serving as the Head Wrestling Coach and Associate Professor of Exercise and Sport Science at Western State College. While Head Wresting Coach at Western State College, his teams won two RMAC championships, two Colorado Collegiate Championships and five national "top 10" finishes. Waggoner was also named "Colorado Collegiate Coach of the Year" twice. Waggoner and his wife Gloria (also an educator) have two grown children, Dillon and Destiny. |
