With over 30 years of experience in athletics management, both at the high school and collegiate levels, Dr. Edward McLean brings to Fayetteville State, a diverse background that includes expertise as an athletics administrator and an academician. In addition, he has intense research in sports psychology and motor behavior.

Entering his first year as director of athletics at Fayetteville State and his 15th year in the athletics arena, Dr. McLean has proven himself to be an effective leader and administrator. He believes that winning in athletics means winning in the classroom.

As athletics director at Elizabeth City State, the university was ranked consistently among the top two or three universities within the University of North Carolina system for its student-athletes graduation rate. In 2001 and 2002, Elizabeth City State was ranked in the top-10 nationally in the USA Today/NCAA Foundation Academic Achievements Awards program, recognizing the university's overall student-athlete graduation rate. Under his leadership, the 2005 baseball and softball teams won the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championships.

Dr. McLean is widely respected by his peers and in 1996-1997 and 2004-2005; they named him CIAA Athletics Director of the Year. Accomplishments by Dr. McLean are numerous including being named the CIAA president (1999-2002), chairperson for both the NCAA National Football Committee Division II (1998-2002) and the NCAA Southern Regional Advisory Football Committee (1994-1998) and President of the CIAA Athletic Directors' Association from 2004-2006.

Dr. McLean has also held leadership positions at Clark Atlanta where he served as athletics director and chair of the physical education department. He is a graduate of North Carolina Central where he earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees. Dr. McLean obtained his doctorate from Tennessee-Knoxville.

He is married to the former Marsha Allen and they have three sons, Justin, Gibran, and Tim.
