Position:
Director of Athletics

Institution:
West Chester University

Dr. Edward M. Matejkovic begins his 13th year as the director of athletics at West Chester (WCU). A 1969 graduate of WCU, Matejkovic spent his previous 11 years at SUNY Brockport, a Division III school located in western New York.

From May of 1990 until his arrival at WCU, Matejkovic held the dual role of athletics director and head football coach.

In 2006-07, the Golden Rams captured five Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) titles, while also seeing two programs (women's soccer, women's lacrosse) advancing to the semifinals in its respective NCAA tournaments. As a result, West Chester claimed runner-up plaudits - its highest finish - in the Dixon Trophy standings and placed a school-best 12th nationally in the U.S. Sports Academy Director's Cup Division II standings as well.

Scholarship allotments have grown, along with the number of full-time assistant coaches across West Chester's 24 intercollegiate programs. All of these changes have helped the university in its success on the field.

Additionally, Matejkovic has helped spearhead a facility upgrade movement that has resulted in new lighting at the South Campus Turf Field behind Sturzebecker Health, Science Center and a brand new state-of-the-art track surface at John A. Farrell Stadium. In conjunction with the new track surface, Farrell Stadium's football field received a brand new playing surface as the natural grass was replaced with FieldTurf.

Matejkovic is the president of the PSAC Executive Committee and continues to serve the PSAC on numerous other committees. He is also a member of the ECAC Board of Directors, the ECAC Finance Committee and the ECAC Membership Committee. He served as president of the ECAC during 2002-03.

In addition, Matejkovic served on the NCAA student-athlete reinstatement committee, the NCAA Division II east region men's basketball championship selection committee and is currently the first vice president of the Division II Athletic Directors Association. He was recently appointed, by the NCAA, to the football task force - a committee reviewing scholarship allocations in the sport.

A native of Coatesville (Pa.), Matejkovic earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from WCU, and his doctorate in sports administration/athletics facility management from Temple. Matejkovic joined the staff of SUNY Brockport in 1984 where he first served as an assistant professor and coordinator of the sport management program.

As head football coach from 1986-94, he racked up more career wins and wins in a single-season, than any coach in the school's history. Matejkovic guided his team to the 1993 ECAC Division III Northeast Championship game. Matejkovic was also named SUNYAC coach of the year while serving as head track and field coach.

In 1990, he was named Brockport's athletics director and promptly turned the program around in just four years. Along with the successful Golden Eagles football team, Brockport's wrestling program won a national title and its volleyball team captured four straight SUNYAC crowns.

On September 22, 2001, Matejkovic was inducted into the Brockport Athletics Hall of Fame. In June of 2003, he was selected to the Temple University "Gallery of Success."

Matejkovic resides in Exton, Pa., with his wife, Debra (WCU '82). He has three children: Jennifer, Leigh (WCU '98) and Jude.
