Gary W. Hall enters his 20th year as Director of Athletics at Barton College for the 2008-09 year, the longest term for an individual to serve in this position in the history of the institution. Barton has established a reputation for broad-based success in its athletic program by winning the Joby Hawn Cup, the all-sports award for Conference Carolinas, three times and placing second seven times during his tenure of leadership. The Bulldogs also won the 2007 NCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. Hall has chaired and served on numerous conference and regional committees and was selected as NAIA District 26 Athletic Administrator of the Year for 1990-91 and 1993-94. He led the institution's effort to re-classify from NAIA to NCAA Division II, a process which was fully completed in 1995. He currently represents Conference Carolinas on the NCAA Division II Athletics Directors Association Board of Directors. For the first 18 years of his service at Barton, Hall also served as the Bulldogs' Head Men's Soccer Coach and is the program's career leader for coaching wins. His Barton teams won three league championships and had a run of 11 winning seasons in a 12-year period, including the first eight years of the program's NCAA Division II affiliation. He retired from college coaching in April of 2007 to devote his energies full-time to the position as Barton's Director of Athletics and was inducted into the North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame in January of 2008. Hall, a native of Winston-Salem, NC, graduated magna cum laude from Barton College in 1980. He captained the men's soccer team to its first ever conference championship in 1978 and first ever NAIA district championship in 1979. He was also named as team MVP, All-Conference, All-District, and Barton's Male Athlete of the Year for 1979-80. He went on to earn an M.A. degree in Sports Psychology at Wake Forest University in 1981 and has done additional graduate study in Athletic Administration at UNC-Greensboro. Hall is married to the former Jean Daughtrey, who is an information technology teacher at Springfield Middle School in Wilson. The couple have a son, Andrew, born in 1994, and a daughter Ashley, born in 1998. Hall is a member of the All-American Kiwanis Club of Wilson, serves as Director of Coaching for the Wilson Youth Soccer Association, and serves on the Board of the Brittany Willis Memorial Scholarship Soccer Showcase. |
