New Jersey Leads Williams by Less than One Point
Cleveland, Ohio - Less than one point separates the College of New Jersey and defending champion Williams College (Mass.) as the winter season comes to a close in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings for Division III.
The Lions cling to first with 626.25 points, holding back Williams with 625.5 points. New Jersey has placed 10th in women's track and field, 12th in men's swimming, 13th in men's track and field, 19th in wrestling and 33rd in women's basketball and swimming.
Williams placed second in women's track and field, third in women's swimming, fifth in men's swimming, ninth in women's basketball, 15th in skiing, 20th in men's track and field and 35th in wrestling. They are followed by Wisconsin La Crosse, in third with 479 points; Washington (Mo.), in fourth with 454.5 points; and Tufts (Mass.), in fifth with 432 points.
This is the final winter standings and includes the sports of women and men's basketball, ice hockey, swimming and track and field, men's wrestling and the National Collegiate sports of fencing and skiing and women's bowling and gymnastics. Winning these national championships were Hope (Mich.) in women's basketball, Virginia Wesleyan in men's basketball, Middlebury (Vt.) in women and men's ice hockey, Emory (Ga.) in women's swimming, Kenyon (Ohio) in men's swimming, Wisconsin Oshkosh in women's track and field, Wisconsin La Crosse in men's track and field and Wartburg (Iowa) in wrestling. The highest Division III finish in women's bowling was New Jersey City in fifth place, in fencing was New York in 14th place, in women's gymnastics was Chicago in 25th and in skiing, Middlebury in seventh place.
The U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program sponsoring. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women's and nine men's.
