National Title moves Michigan into top 5 of Winter Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings
CLEVELAND - Stanford continues to lead in the Division I Learfield Sports Directors' Cup winter standings. The Cardinal finished third in men's gymnastics and now have 1082.75 total points.
Penn State is in second place with 856 points after placing sixth in men's gymnastics. Wisconsin remains in third place with 705 points. The Badgers scored in the men's ice hockey tournament. With 698.25 points, in fourth place, is Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish recorded points in the men's ice hockey tournament. Rounding out the top five is a tie at 650 points between Michigan and North Carolina. Michigan won the national championship in men's gymnastics for an additional 100 points.
The ACC and Big Ten lead Division I conferences with four institutions ranked in the top 10. In the ACC, Notre Dame is fourth, North Carolina is fifth, Duke is ninth and Florida State is 10th. In the Big Ten, Penn State is second, Wisconsin is third, Michigan is fifth and Minnesota is seventh.
Fourteen winter Division I championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: men's gymnastics - Michigan; men's ice hockey - Union (NY) (DIII); women's bowling - Sam Houston State; women's basketball - Connecticut; men's basketball - Connecticut; fencing - Penn State; women's ice hockey - Clarkson (DIII); women's swimming & diving - Georgia; men's swimming & diving - California; rifle - West Virginia; skiing - Denver; women's indoor track & field - Oregon; men's indoor track & field - Oregon; wrestling - Penn State.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- ten women's and ten men's.
The final Division I winter standings will be released Thursday, April 24, which will include women's gymnastics.
