Stanford and Michigan in Close Race for the Sports Academy Directors' Cup Standings

Cleveland, Ohio - Stanford University and the University of Michigan are still in a close battle for the Division I Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings, with just 16.5 points separating the leader.

Stanford holds onto its precarious lead with 797.75 points. The Cardinal placed second in men's swimming, fifth in women's basketball and swimming, eighth in women's track and field, 11th in fencing, 13th in men's track and field, 33rd in men's basketball and 37th in men's wrestling.

Michigan has tallied 781.25 points to stay with the leader. The Wolverines placed second in men's wrestling, fifth in men's ice hockey, sixth in men's gymnastics and swimming, ninth in men's track and field, 13th in women's track and field and 14th in women's swimming. They are followed by Wisconsin, in third with 626.75 points; Texas, fourth with 618.25 points; and North Carolina in fifth with 596.5 points.

This is the third set of winter standings and includes the sports of fencing, rifle, skiing, women and men's basketball, ice hockey, swimming and track and field, women's ice hockey and men's gymnastics and wrestling. Winning these championships were Notre Dame in fencing, Army in rifle, Denver in skiing, Baylor in women's basketball, North Carolina in men's basketball, Oklahoma in men's gymnastics, Minnesota in women's ice hockey, Denver in men's ice hockey, Georgia in women's swimming, Auburn in men's swimming, Tennessee in women's track and field, Arkansas in men's track and field and Oklahoma State in men's wrestling.

The Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program sponsor. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 women's and 10 men's.
