Two Past Champions Hold Onto The Lead In The United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup Standings

Cleveland, Ohio - Four-time champion Simon Fraser University (B.C.), which has held the lead throughout the year, has maintained its hold on the top spot in the 2003-04 United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings for the NAIA.

The champion from 1997-2000, Simon Fraser posted 718.75 points, scoring in five sports, including championships in women and men's swimming. With a lead of 166.75 points, SFU also placed second in women's track and field, eighth in men's track and field and 10th in men's wrestling.

Holding onto second place is last year's champion, Lindenwood (Mo.), with 552 points, based on a second place finish in men's track and field, fourth in women's track and field, fifth in men's swimming and wrestling and ninth in women's swimming. They are followed by Azusa Pacific (Calif.), in third with 520 points; Mary (N.D.), fourth with 455 points; and Cedarville (Ohio), in fifth with 413 points.

These are the final winter standings and includes the sports women and men's Division I and II basketball, swimming and track and field; and men's wrestling. In addition to Simon Fraser, winning these championships were Southern Nazarene (Okla.) in Division I women's basketball, Mountain State (W.Va.) in Division I men's basketball, Morningside (Iowa) in Division II women's basketball, Oregon Tech in Division II men's basketball, Azusa Pacific in women and men's track and field and Montana State-Northern in men's wrestling.

The United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is in its first year sponsoring the program. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 12 sports - six women's and six men's. Each national champion receives 100 points.
