Defending Champion Increases Its Lead in the Sports Academy Directors' Cup Standings

Cleveland, Ohio - Defending champion Grand Valley State University (Mich.), which held a 39.5 point lead in the last set of Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings for Division II, has pushed that margin to a 69.5 point lead.

Grand Valley State posted 532.5 points with a fifth place finish in women's basketball, 14th in women's swimming, 16th in women's track and field and 18th in men's track and field.

Jumping from fourth to second place, with 463 points, is Cal State Bakersfield, based on a second place finish in men's swimming, fourth in men's track and field, seventh in women's track and field, eighth in women's swimming, 22nd in men's wrestling and 33rd in women's basketball. They are followed by South Dakota, in third with 449.25 points; Adams State (Colo.), in fourth with 420 points; and Truman State (Mo.), fifth with 416 points.

This is the second set of winter standings and includes the sports of fencing, rifle, skiing, women and men's basketball, swimming and track and field and men's wrestling. Winning these national championships were Washburn (Kan.) in women's basketball, Virginia Union in men's basketball, Truman State in women's swimming, Drury (Mo.) in men's swimming, St. Augustine's (N.C.) in women's track and field, Abilene Christian (Tex.) in men's track and field and Nebraska Omaha in men's wrestling. The highest Division II finish in fencing, rifle and skiing, national collegiate sports, were Wayne State (Mich.), 10th in fencing; Alaska Fairbanks, fourth in rifle; and Alaska Anchorage, seventh in skiing.

The Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program sponsor. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women's and seven men's.
