Williams Continues its Dominance in The United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup Standings

Cleveland, Ohio - Seven-time champion Williams College (Mass.) has led in the Division III United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings since May 2002.

The Ephs open the winter season with 821.25 points and a 91.25 point lead. The runner-up in men's basketball, Williams also placed fourth in women's swimming, sixth in men's swimming, 12th in women's track and field, 13th in skiing and men's wrestling and 32nd in men's track and field.

Moving into second place is Wisconsin Stevens Point with 730 points, led by its championship in men's basketball, along with third place in women's track and field, fourth in women's basketball, sixth in men's track and field, ninth in men's wrestling, 13th in men's swimming and 35th in women's swimming. Rounding out the top five are New Jersey, in third with 623.75 points; Wisconsin La Crosse, in fourth with 621 points; and Amherst, in fifth with 486.5 points.

This is the first set of winter standings and includes the sports of women and men's basketball, swimming and track and field; and skiing and men's wrestling. In addition to Wisconsin Stevens Points, winning these national championships were Wilmington (Ohio) in women's basketball, Kenyon (Ohio) in women and men's swimming, Wisconsin Oshkosh in women's track and field, Wisconsin La Crosse in men's track and field and Wartburg (Iowa) in men's wrestling. The highest Division III finish in skiing, a National Collegiate sport, was seventh by Middlebury (Vt.).

The United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is in its first year sponsoring the program. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women's and nine men's. Each national champion receives 100 points.
