CLEVELAND - The Collegiate Event and Facility Management Association (CEFMA) Board of Directors recently held its annual spring meeting in San Diego, California to finalize 2012 Convention plans. In addition to finalizing the Convention items, the Board participated in a community outreach event at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA.
The CEFMA Board met with the YMCA Executive Director, Board of Directors and staff to share its expertise in facility and event management. The groups collaborated to share ideas and best practices to help facilitate a capital campaign to build a new facility.
"The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA has been a staple in the community since 1943, so I'm glad that that CEFMA Board was able to share its ideas with the Y leadership," stated CEFMA Board Member John David Wicker, senior associate athletics director/COO at San Diego State University.
The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA recently began a capital campaign to build a new facility. Due to the area the YMCA is located, the YMCA group was also looking for ways to better secure the facility to make sure it is a safe environment for its constituents.
"Jackie Robinson often said, `A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives,'" stated Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Executive Director Michael Brunker. "The CEFMA Board of Directors day of service at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA went a long way to making an impact on kids and families in San Diego County's most critical community where we work hard to help youngsters join teams, not gangs. Your efforts will play a big role in developing winners in the biggest game of all - the game of life. Thanks for spending your heaven doing good on earth at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA!"
About the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA: In 1971, the Southeast YMCA, with input from the community, was renamed The Jackie Robison Memorial YMCA Branch and ultimately the name changed to the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. The rededication of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA was attended by Dave Robinson, son of Jackie Robinson, and Buzzi Bavisi, who had managed Jackie with the Dodgers. As the namesake memorial to Jackie Robinson we have a responsibility to continue the legacy of breaking all barriers through the values of courage, persistence, integrity, justice, teamwork, citizenship, determination, commitment, and excellence that Jackie Robinson stood for as we strive to meet the mission of the YMCA.
