Question:

WKU is considering doing a Winter Term in early January. Athletics is concerned at the cost which will impact our budget. Our AD, Dr. Selig, is asking me to survey my fellow business managers on this subject. Please see his concerns and questions below:

Darrell, see if you can survey your business managers and see how many schools have this and what the expenses are that come with this term and the additional expenses as a result of shifted calenders. Would like to prepare a list of schools who help subsidize winter term as part of athletic or institutional scholarship support and see if any get proceeds from winter term to help defray additional expenses as a result of this term.

I appreciate your prompt replies.

Responses:

At DePaul, we are on the Quarter system, with the Fall term ending at Thanksgiving and Winter term beginning the first week of January. There is a two week "mini" session during December. We only approve requests for this session for the following reasons: It will allow a student to graduate on time, prevent a student from having to attend summer school or a 5th year, or if it is an international student who is unable to return home and there are funds available in the budget.
Hope this helps!

Vanderbilt has Fall and Spring semesters and a Summer session.

At UMKC, we have fall, spring, and summer semesters. Summer has several mini sessions. Due to budget constraints, we only allow summer school to those who have to have it for eligibility purposes or to graduate in the summer.
