Question:
I am collecting information to make a presentation here at CWU regarding policies on RECRUITING expenses at public institutions.
I am curious how things are handled at other public institutions in other states as well as here in Washington.
What types of funding do you use to pay for entertainment related recruiting expenses (meals, lodging, host money, transportation, etc.)?
1) For your recruit and their parent/guardian,
2) For your coaches
3) For your student hosts
My previous experience in California and Texas has been that we were able to pay and reimburse for "entertainment" related expenses for recruiting student athletes through registration fees and various generated income sources provided there was a valid "business" purpose.
Here in the state of Washington I am told that the portion of expenses that relate to the recruit & parent must be paid from "private/Foundation" funds and the rest can be paid from registration fees and generated income for coaches and student hosts since they are performing a "University" service as an employee or current student.
I will put together a summary once I receive replies and provide it to CABMA members as requested.
Thank you,

Responses:
At Purdue we can charge all recruiting expenses to our departmental funds. I should point out that we receive no funds from the Univ., student fees, or the State. So, all of our departmental funds are generated by us,i.e. gate receipts, gifts, marketing $, Big Ten Conf. revenue sharing and NCAA. I think that is why the Univ. is ok with charging all recruiting expenses to those funds.

At Miami all of our expenses are charged to our operating funds.
