Nominations Due For The John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Awards
CLEVELAND -- The John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarships Award Program is underway. In October, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) mailed nomination forms and criteria to every four-year NACDA-member athletics director.
These awards are for minority students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. The deadline for nominating students is Friday, February 4. All nominations must be in the NACDA office (not postmarked) by that date. Nominations may be mailed, shipped overnight or faxed. However, only submit the nominations one time.
To be nominated, a student is required to meet federal guidelines for definition as a minority, including Black, Hispanic, Asian or Pacific Islander, and American Indian or Alaskan Native; be a full-time senior at some point during the 1999-2000 year; have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale; be planning to pursue a postgraduate course of study in athletics administration within five years of receipt of the award; and have demonstrated leadership qualities on a college/university or community level. Students who are not of the listed origins, but have married someone of the listed origins are not eligible. In this inaugural year of the program, students who graduated last year (December 1998 through December 1999) and who request an eligibility waiver will be grandfathered into the program and will be eligible.
Five winners will receive a $10,000 grant to be used towards postgraduate studies. The winners will receive their awards at NACDA's 35th annual Convention, June 11-14 at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. The Scholar-Athlete Awards Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, June 13.
Nomination forms may be completed by any member of the athletics department, but must be signed by the athletics director and the nominated student.
Questions on the program or requests for additional nomination forms may be directed to Laurie Garrison (email@example.com) or Brian Horning (firstname.lastname@example.org) in the NACDA office at 440/892-4000. The nomination forms should be mailed to: PO Box 16428, Cleveland, Ohio 44116; sent in overnight mail to: 24651 Detroit Road, Westlake, Ohio 44145; or faxed to: 440/892-4007.
