In the world of collegiate athletics our job is to interact with a cross section of people on a daily, almost minute-by-minute basis. From student-athletes, to professors, to coaches, to donors, to alumni and fans, all of us have to use our communication skills on a regular basis in order to get the job done. In addition, if you have aspirations to advance your career, your conduct in this realm will dictate your future. Here are a few best practice tips I try to live by:

As the landscape of college athletics has changed dramatically over the past decades, it is amazing to see how important the role of athletics development is to each institution or setting. Like always, the demand and emphasis to support and underwrite our various programs has accelerated with tremendous growth. As we strive to meet the needs, we are fortunate as development professionals to call on an Association to enhance our knowledge and expertise to succeed.

NAADD is pleased to have former Major League Baseball (MLB) player, Jim Abbott, as our keynote speaker. Jim Abbott is an amazing person and has an exciting story and message to share with us. We will all benefit by hearing his approach to overcoming adversity as well as his reasons for being a major donor to the University of Michigan. Abbott is not only an example of someone who has overcome great adversity to achieve his dreams, but he is also setting a tremendous example by being one of the few former professional athletes who engage with and financially support their alma mater.
