Second Annual Division I-AA ADs Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year Chosen Cleveland, Ohio - Chase Corn, a football player at Wofford College, has been chosen as the recipient of the annual Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AA ADA) Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and will receive a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship. Corn was selected from a group of 10 finalists. He will receive his award during the DI-AA ADA reception on Friday, June 13 at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. "The Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association is proud to present a scholarship to one of our outstanding student-athletes," said John Johnson, chair of the Division I-AA ADA Academic All-Star Team Selection Committee and athletics director at Weber State. "Chase is an excellent representation of the student-athletes competing at Division I-AA schools." Football players from all Division I-AA institutions were eligible for the Division I-AA Academic All-Star Team. There were 115 nominees, of which 43 were selected to the All-Star Team. The 10 finalists, from which Corn was chosen, were among the 43 members of the All-Star Team. Nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. He must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his designated position. Corn, an outside linebacker, posted a GPA of 3.73 in biology. A three-time Verizon Academic All-American, Corn was also on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll and Wofford's Deans List. He was selected as the Southern Conference Player of the Week following Wofford's 13-0 win at The Citadel. Corn tallied 58 tackles, nine for loss; and had two sacks; one interception; and two quarterback hurries. He anchored a Wofford defense that topped the Southern Conference and ranked in the top 20 in the nation by allowing just 270.4 yards per game. Corn will attend medical school at the University of South Carolina where he plans to specialize in orthopedic sports medicine. "As an athlete, I understand the frustrations of being injured and I appreciate the rewards of a successful recovery," says Corn. "I hope to give back to an institution in your organization by providing my services in the future, to assist many athletes in their recoveries so that they may have a chance to participate and excel in their respective sports after sustaining an injury." A special Review Committee of Division I-AA athletics directors was responsible for selecting the scholarship recipient. Completing this task were John Johnson, chair, Weber State; Terry Driscoll, William and Mary; Kim Graham, Liberty; Wayne Hogan, Montana; Steve McCarty, Stephen F. Austin; Dave Roach, Brown; Dennis Thomas, Hampton; and Perk Weisenburger, Illinois State. Now in its 10th year, the Division I-AA Athletics Directors Association's mission is to enhance Division I-AA football. The Association is administered by NACDA, which, now in its 38th year, is the professional and educational association for more than 6,150 athletics directors, associates, assistants and conference administrators at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Through its series of management seminars, clinics and workshops and publication of the bi-monthly magazine Athletics Administration, NACDA offers educational opportunities to its members. More than 1,200 athletics administrators annually attend the NACDA Convention. Additionally, NACDA operates the NACDA Directors' Cup program, which honors the all-sports champion in each of the NCAA Divisions -- I, II and III -- and the NAIA, for a total of four trophies.
