1. Welcome - Ken Kavanagh, Bradley University

2. Introductions

3. Bob Vecchione (Associate Executive Director of NACDA):
NACDA is a "full service association management company". Currently, NACDA manages eight intercollegiate organizations. NACDA has developed a format that is utilized to run associations. NACDA is willing to provide assistance in any capacity to get the I-AAA organization established. A staff liaison and intern can be assigned to assist the organization. A fee structure can also be implemented to help defray overhead costs of running the organization. NACDA can assist the organization in its first year but can not provide ongoing financial support(mailings, stationary, postage) without appropriate reimbursement. The I-AAA organization can establish an institutional membership fee. NACDA will open the checking account and a NACDA staff member will serve as a statutory agent. The staff member will sign off on all checks.

4. Ken Kavanagh - Why are we here? - Purpose of Organization
  • NCAA Legislation - shared viewpoints and potential voting block on key issues
  • Networking - basketball scheduling contacts, references for personnel searches, etc.

7. Ken Kavanagh presented a draft of a sample I-AAA Association logo for consideration - opened up to others for revision if interested.

8. Conference Commissioners can be utilized to encourage their conference members to consider joining the I-AAA Association.

9. Open Discussion

Jim Schaus (Wichita State) - Commended Ken for taking the initiative to establish the I-AAA Association. Why do we need this organization? What we make out of this is what we put into it. Compression of D-I Athletics - take guard for our institutions to protect where we are going - fight for ourselves and represent ourselves. We will obviously need to sell our membership on where their dues will go. This will develop further. Affirmed his interest to really make this a force and a legitimate association - it will take institutional commitment.

How to Increase Membership? Discussion led by Bill Hogan

Encourage members in attendance at the first meeting to make phone calls to invite participation. Trustees representing each conference can work among themselves to spread the word

It was recommended to send out copies of meeting minutes, purpose, advantages, Bylaws etc. letting others know we are a legitimate organization - followed up with a personal phone call.

Use Executive Committee as point of contact to get the word out to institutions.

Set-up association list serve - goal to have 50 institutions on board after the first year.

Meeting at NCAA Convention - Could use the Convention as another opportunity to meet - as young organization need opportuntities to meet face to face. There have been four previous attempts to make this organization work - this is the furthest we have come to this point.

It was voted: The I-AAA Athletic Directors Association will hold its second meeting at the 2002 NCAA Convention which will be held in Indianapolis.

Bill Hogan (San Francisco) Moved Motion Jim Schaus (Wichita State) - Seconded the Motion; ALL IN FAVOR

Wrap Up
Information will be sent out to I-AAA Athletic Directors approximately two weeks after the NACDA convention. Phone Calls can be made immediately. Will include a summary of this meeting in the next issue of the NACDA newsletter and the NCAA News.

Reaffirmed the benefits of membership - share common ground due to lack of football or non-scholarship football - strength in numbers - strong leadership.

I-AA institutions with non-scholarship football also interested in getting involved - these institutions will be invited to attend the meeting during the 2002 NCAA convention.
