Williams Returns to the Lead in the Division III Sears Directors' Cup Race

Cleveland, Ohio - Defending champion Williams College (Mass.), which had moved into second place in the last set of Division III Sears Directors' Cup standings, has retaken the lead with 622.5 points as the winter championship season comes to a close. The program is presented by the nation's athletics directors.

Williams has scored in six winter sports, led by fourth place showings in women's swimming and indoor track and field. The Ephs also placed 12th in skiing, 15th in men's swimming, 17th in men's basketball and 35th in men's indoor track and field. The Sears Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. It is administered by NACDA and sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and Co.

Moving back into second place is the College of New Jersey with 588 points. They are followed by Wisconsin-Stevens Point, third with 577 points; Ithaca (N.Y.), fourth with 562 points; and Wisconsin-Oshkosh, fifth with 552 points.

This is the final winter standings and includes the sports of women's and men's basketball, ice hockey, swimming and indoor track and field; men's wrestling; and fencing, rifle and skiing. Winning national championships were Wisconsin-Stevens Point in women's basketball; Otterbein (Ohio) in men's basketball; Elmira (N.Y.) in women's ice hockey; Wisconsin-Superior in men's ice hockey; Kenyon in women's and men's swimming; Wheaton (Mass.) in women's indoor track and field; Wisconsin-LaCrosse in men's indoor track and field; and Augsburg (Minn.) in men's wrestling. The highest Division III finishes in the national collegiate sports were New York, 11th in fencing; Coast Guard (Conn.), 8th in rifle; and Middlebury (Vt.), 11th in skiing.

Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each national champion receives 100 points.

Codes are as follows: W - women, M - men, BB - basketball; IHoc - ice hockey; SW - swimming; T&F - track and field; and WR - wrestling.
